Call for submissions and initial sitting - independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence
The independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence has today invited public submissions and announced the initial sitting of the Commission will be held on Friday 10 June, 2022.
The Commissioner, Her Honour Judge Deborah Richards, said the Commission invites interested persons to provide written submissions which relate to the scope of the inquiry.
“We encourage those providing a submission to visit the Commission’s website for further information about the process,” Judge Richards said.
“Submissions will be accepted until 17 June, 2022 and can be provided by email or post.”
The initial sitting of the Commission of Inquiry will be held in Court 17, Brisbane Magistrates Court from 9.30am on Friday 10 June 2022.
he independent Commission of Inquiry commenced on 30 May as a recommendation of the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce report, ‘Hear her voice’.
The independent Commission of Inquiry will examine Queensland policing responses to domestic and family violence. Under the terms of reference, the Commission has been established to examine:
- whether there is, and if so, the extent and nature of, any cultural issues within the Queensland Police Service that negatively affects police investigations of domestic and family violence
- if there are any cultural issues, whether these cultural issues have contributed to the overrepresentation of First Nations people in the criminal justice system
- the capability, capacity and structure of the Queensland Police Service to respond to domestic and family violence, and
- the adequacy of the current conduct and complaints handling processes against police officers.
A final report is due to the Premier and Minister for Olympics, the Attorney-General and Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, and Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, by 4 October 2022.
