Commission of Inquiry public hearings

The Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service (QPS) responses to domestic and family violence
will sit for public hearings on 5, 6 and 7 October 2022.

The hearings will be held at the Brisbane Magistrates Court and will be livestreamed from the Commission’s
website commencing at 10am each morning. The courtroom number will be advised via media statement
and on the Commission’s website prior to the hearings.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll will be re-called to give further evidence on Wednesday 5 October
2022 following her initial appearance on 18 August 2022. Mr Ian Leavers, Queensland Police Union of
Employees President, will be called to give evidence on Friday 7 October 2022.

Following Police Commissioner Carroll’s evidence on 18 August, the Commissioner, Her Honour Judge
Deborah Richards re-opened submissions to 5 September 2022 to gather further information on cultural
issues relating to sexism, misogyny and racism in the QPS.

More than 550 submissions have now been received by the Commission, including more than 250 since the
submission period re-opened.

In July and August 2022, the Commission sat for several weeks of hearings in both Brisbane and regional
Queensland, which saw more than 75 witnesses give evidence. Witnesses included serving and retired QPS
officers from across Queensland, domestic and family violence service providers, experts in domestic and
family violence policing, and victim-survivors. Evidence has also been heard from a number of First Nations
people and service providers regarding QPS responses to domestic and family violence.

The Commission’s report will be handed to the Premier and Minister for Olympics, the Attorney-General
and Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, and Minister for
Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services on 14 November 2022.
