Extension of submission deadline to the independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence

The deadline for submissions to the independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence has been extended to 24 June 2022.

The Commission is working within strict timeframes to deliver its final report by 4 October 2022, however as the Commission has been advised that some members of the community have experienced difficulties accessing the website, the deadline for submissions has been extended from 17 June 2022 to 24 June 2022.

The Commission will hold its first sitting at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday 10 June at 9:30am, where the Commissioner and Counsel Assisting will provide further information about the Inquiry.

The Commission welcomes submissions from interested parties who have information that may assist the Commission with regard to any cultural issues that may exist as a barrier to optimal investigation of domestic and family violence matters. In examining these cultural issues, the Commission will consider individual cases, however, because of the Commission’s focus on the systemic issues affecting police responses and the limited timeframe allowed for the Inquiry, the Commission will not be investigating and making findings in relation to any individual cases which may be the subject of submissions received by it.

The Commission acknowledges the time and effort that many members of the Queensland community have already put into providing submissions to the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce on the issue and acknowledges the emotional and mental impacts of retelling traumatic incidents upon victim survivors. To alleviate the need for members of the community to re-submit their experiences to the Commission, the Commission will have access to and will take into account the submissions received by the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce.

The independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence was announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on 10 May 2022, and commenced on 30 May 2022. It is due to report to the Premier and Minister for Olympics, the Attorney-General and Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, and Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, by 4 October 2022.
